|The PCA has learned through Dr Victor J. Rizzo, PCA’s chiropractic representative on the PA Radiation Protection Advisory Committee (RPAC), that the PA Department of Environmental protection (DEP) has recently instituted a new regulation that requires chiropractors who use digital X-rays to perform and document a quarterly phantom shot, in an effort to minimize “dose creep”, or excessive radiation by digital machines.
You don’t need the phantom immediately – you will be given a grace period if you are inspected without one, but it will most certainly help you by meeting the DEP the requirement sooner than later.
Phantoms can be costly and average around $975; however, you can co-purchase a phantom with multiple chiropractors who have digital machines and rotate the phantom on a quarterly basis.
