HOW LONG MUST I KEEP PATIENTS’ MEDICAL RECORDS??

HOW LONG MUST I KEEP PATIENTS’ MEDICAL RECORDS??

For adults:

Federal Law – for Medicare and other federal health care programs = must keep records for 10 years.

PA Law – For everything besides Medicare and other federal health care programs = must keep record for 7 years.

For children:  must follow the above, but may have to keep the records even longer since the requirement is that they must be kept until the child reaches the age of majority (18) plus 1 year.  So if a child is 4 years old, must keep the records for 15 years (14 + 1).
